The RPL pathway for experienced VET professionals, ADF and Defence instructors, AFP and police trainers, and Government / Industry trainers and assessors.

If you already deliver and assess training as a VET practitioner, ADF instructor, AFP or police trainer, or government trainer, this pathway recognises that experience. Check your eligibility

Built for experienced VET professionals, Defence and government trainers

This pathway is designed for people with substantial current or recent experience delivering and assessing training in a structured, competency-based environment - in a registered training organisation (RTO), in the Australian Defence Force, in law enforcement, or across government and industry. You do not need a previous TAE qualification, and you do not need to have worked in an RTO. Your experience is assessed on its merits.

VET sector

Experienced VET professionals

VET practitioners, trainers and assessors who want their experience recognised in the current TAE40122 qualification - including those holding earlier TAE40110 or TAE40116 qualifications.

ADF & Defence

ADF and Defence personnel

Instructors and supervisors from the Navy, Army and Air Force - serving, Reserve, transitioning or former members - and Defence civilian trainers. Units issued through the Defence RTO are reviewed for Credit Transfer.

AFP & police

AFP and police trainers

Australian Federal Police (AFP) and state and territory police instructors, field training officers and workplace assessors who plan, deliver and assess structured training.

Government

Government organisations

Trainers, instructors and learning and development staff in Commonwealth, state and local government agencies, including emergency services and other public sector training teams.

Aviation

Aviation instructors

Flight instructors, including CASA-rated instructors, and other aviation trainers delivering competency-based instruction.

Industry

Health, trades, mining and corporate

Workplace trainers, supervisors and learning and development professionals from any industry who deliver and assess structured training.

What this pathway is - and is not

This is an RPL assessment pathway with gap training where required - not a full coursework program and not a shortcut. Competency is awarded when your assessor has valid, current, sufficient and authentic evidence that you meet every requirement of each unit. Industry, Defence and other internal training frameworks are not automatically treated as nationally recognised VET training products - where a unit needs VET-specific knowledge, you will show it separately.

Your Defence, Police and Industry experience already counts

Skills commonly demonstrated by experienced trainers, instructors and supervisors - in the ADF, the AFP, government and any industry - that can provide evidence towards this qualification include:

Training delivery

Delivering training and assessment to develop and maintain skills in individual staff and teams.

Leading and developing teams

Monitoring, coaching and supporting junior supervisors and their staff in the workplace.

Quality assurance

Implementing and ensuring workplace quality assurance procedures and protocols.

Compliance

Working within policy, directives, instructions, regulations and standard operating procedures.

Reporting and appraisal

Preparing written and verbal reports and writing staff appraisal reports to organisational guidelines.

Communication and networks

Communicating with management and staff, and liaising with peers to meet workplace obligations.

Is the RPL-EVP pathway right for you?

This pathway is available to candidates who meet the following:

1

VET practitioner or industry trainer

Experience in an RTO, or in industry: the ADF (Navy, Army, Air Force, including Reserve and transitioning members), the AFP and police, emergency services, government, aviation, health, trades, corporate or any other sector.

2

Substantial training and assessment experience

Current or recent experience as an instructor, supervisor or workplace trainer who plans, delivers and assesses structured training.

3

Evidence you can provide

Records of your training and assessment work that can be released without breaching security, confidentiality or privacy requirements.

4

A referee

A supervisor, senior instructor, training manager or training officer with direct and recent knowledge of your training and assessment work.

No previous TAE or RTO experience required

Candidates are assessed through HBTA's Experienced VET and Industry Trainer/Assessor pathway. A previous TAE qualification or employment within an RTO is not required - but if you have them, they count. Any nationally recognised units you already hold - including earlier TAE qualifications such as TAE40110 or TAE40116, and units issued through the Defence RTO - are reviewed for Credit Transfer where equivalent. Non-accredited instructor courses and ratings (for example ADF instructor courses, AFP, police or emergency services instructor courses, or CASA flight instructor ratings) are used as evidence towards RPL rather than Credit Transfer.

Evidence that works well

Your RPL is evidence-led. These are the kinds of documents experienced VET professionals, ADF members, AFP officers and government trainers typically provide.

Evidence

What it shows

Resume, service history or employment records

Your roles and the duration and currency of your training positions (e.g. ADF PMKeyS report, AFP or police service record)

Performance appraisals and reviews

Assessed performance in training, supervising, mentoring and developing staff (e.g. ADF PARs)

Instructor qualifications, ratings and course records

Instructor, assessor and trade courses completed - e.g. CASA instructor ratings, ADF ROAs, AFP, police or emergency services instructor courses

Position descriptions and duty statements

Your formal training and assessment responsibilities

Lesson plans, training programs and instructional material

How you plan, sequence and deliver structured training

Assessment records and learner feedback

Assessments you have conducted and the quality of your delivery

Certificates and your USI Transcript

Nationally recognised units you already hold (including earlier TAE qualifications), for Credit Transfer

Security, confidentiality and privacy

Do not include classified, restricted, operationally sensitive or commercially confidential material. Remove learner, patient and client names and personal details, and obtain permission from your employer or chain of command where required. If a document cannot be released, talk to your assessor - an alternative form of valid evidence can be considered.

How your RPL journey works

Your RPL Statement explains what you have done, your evidence supports it, a Third Party Report confirms your practice, and your assessor maps the complete evidence set against every unit requirement.

Step 1

Enquire

Contact us to talk about your role, your training and assessment experience, and what you need the qualification for.

Step 2

Send your documents

Provide your USI Transcript, copies of any qualifications (including instructor or assessor qualifications or ratings) and the completed Self-Assessment Questionnaire.

Step 3

Receive your Training and Assessment Plan

We review everything and prepare your individual plan - the 12 units, any Credit Transfer and the pathway for each unit - with your fee and enrolment link.

Step 4

Enrol and pay

Complete the Pre-Enrolment and Enrolment Forms. We send your invoice; once payment is received, your enrolment is activated.

Step 5

Get started

Your trainer sends your welcome email with your RPL Statement and Third Party Report, customised to the units in your plan.

Step 6

Build your evidence

Complete the RPL Statement using real examples from your own workplace, number your evidence in the Evidence Index, and give the Third Party Report to your referee.

Step 7

Assessment

Your assessor will review everything, and a competency discussion will be held with you. Any targeted gap training, which may include full units of competency, will be discussed with you.

Step 8

Qualification issued

Once all 12 units are Competent, your TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is issued.

Where candidates most often need gap training

In our experience, these are the units most likely to need some gap training:
  • TAEDES411 Use nationally recognised training products to meet vocational training needs
  • TAEPDD401 Work effectively in the VET sector
  • TAEDES412 Design and develop plans for vocational training
  • TAEASS412 Assess competence
  • TAEASS413 Participate in assessment validation
They require specific knowledge of the Australian VET system - training.gov.au, nationally recognised training products, RTO compliance and assessment validation - which industry, Defence, policing and aviation training frameworks do not always cover, even for very experienced instructors. Experienced VET practitioners will often have much of this covered already. After your assessor has reviewed everything and held a competency discussion with you, any targeted gap training, which may include full units of competency, will be discussed with you. Gap training is included in your $2,500 fee.

Third party verification: your referee

The Third Party Report is a mandatory part of this pathway. It independently confirms your training and assessment practice. Your referee:

  • Has direct and recent knowledge of your training and assessment work - for example your supervisor, a senior instructor, training officer, chief flying instructor, training manager or RTO manager.
  • Only confirms what they have observed or can verify through workplace records. They do not make the assessment decision.
  • Must not include classified, restricted, operationally sensitive or commercially confidential information.
  • Can be supported by a second referee if one person cannot verify every unit.

The TAE40122 qualification: 12 units

You complete 12 units - 6 core units plus 6 electives - under the TAE40122 packaging rules. Your mix of RPL and Credit Transfer is confirmed in your Training and Assessment Plan before you enrol.

Frequently asked questions

Can ADF members get RPL for the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment?

Yes. Serving, Reserve, transitioning and former Navy, Army and Air Force instructors and supervisors can use their Defence training and assessment experience as evidence. ADF instructor courses, ROAs, PMKeyS reports and PARs all support your RPL, and units issued through the Defence RTO are reviewed for Credit Transfer.

Is AFP and police instructor experience recognised?

Yes. AFP and state and territory police instructors, field trainers and workplace assessors who plan, deliver and assess structured training are well suited to this pathway. Police instructor courses and service records are used as evidence towards RPL.

Do I need to have worked in an RTO or hold a previous TAE qualification?

No. A previous TAE qualification or RTO employment is not required. If you are an experienced VET professional who already holds TAE40110 or TAE40116, those units are reviewed for Credit Transfer where equivalent.

Is there any coursework?

This is RPL assessment with gap training where required, not a full coursework program. Your assessor will review everything, and a competency discussion will be held with you. Any targeted gap training, which may include full units of competency, will be discussed with you - and it is included in your $2,500 fee.

How much does the TAE40122 RPL-EVP pathway cost?

The complete RPL pathway is $2,500 with no hidden fees. A payment plan is available: an initial $1,200 (including a non-refundable $200 application fee), with the balance paid within 6 months.
